Calling

One of the most challenging and enjoyable parts of turkey hunting is turkey "calling". Various types of calls are used to mimic the natural “talk” of the wild turkey. By mimicking a female the hunter attempts to entice the gobbler into range. To hear the various sounds or “calls” of the wild turkey click here.

Calling Contests

During the “off” season turkey hunters practice their calling by competing in Calling Contests where they test their skills against other “callers”.  The Houston Chapter helps with two such contests in this area, The Texas State Calling Contest and the Bass Pro Spring Classic.  Winners of the Open division in each of these contests are eligible to compete on the National Level.  Each of these contests also have Hunter and Junior divisions.

Calling Seminars

The Houston Chapter holds several workshops through out the year to help hunters hone their calling skills or learn new tactics. Just contact us for more info or to set up a seminar for your group.

This annual statewide event featured five divisions and a total awards package eclipsing last year’s contest, with competitors taking home more than $3,000 in Trophies, Cash, Gift Cards, and Merchandise

Duplicating last year’s victory in the State Division, Aaron Barton of Lampasas once again out-called a strong group of competitors to claim the coveted title of “Texas State Turkey Calling Champion” by posting a winning score of 268. Former Two-time State Champ, Shaine Nixon of Diana, took second with a score of 262, as up-and-coming caller, Cade Hayley of Winnsboro, finished 3rd at 254. (complete results)
